Dealing with crime together - a community event

As members of the Victim Support Unit at Parkview SAPS, my team and I have first hand experience of the steadily increasing despondency and frustration amongst members of the community who are victims of crime.

It is thus that the Victim Support Unit of Parkview Police in conjunction with the Parkview Police is hosting a Community Event with the purpose of:

  • highlighting the unacceptable levels and intensity of crime in our area (which in turn reflects national crime levels); and

  • drawing attention to the limited resources available to counteract crime.

The Event will take place on Saturday 17th November 2007 at George Hay Park (cnr. Westmeath Road and Kildare Ave, Parkview) between 13h00 - 15h00.

We are calling the event 'Community of Parkview Police - One Voice Together', and it aims to:

  • acknowledge victims of crime in the community by providing them with ribbons to tie on the fence of the park in order to provide a visual and symbolic record of their experience of crime;

  • provide an informal and positive setting in which Permanent and Reservist members from various Police Stations (including Parkview, Bramley, Linden, Randburg, Hillbrow, Sophiatown, Norwood, Sandton and Rosebank) and members of the wider community can meet and talk about issues of wider concern; and

  • garner greater community support for the volunteer services associated with the SAPS such as the Reservists, the Community Policing Forums, the Domestic Workers' Watch and the Victim Support/Empowerment Units.

The programme will be informal, although we are planning to have David Bullard say a few words, to tie the ribbons and to have a minute's silence for victims of crime.

We are furthermore looking for some funding or any donations for the following items for the event. Most of these have already been paid for by the Victim Support Unit. We would appreciate assistance in any way for:

Printing of 5000 black and white flyers : R 875,00
Printing of 50 colour posters: R500,00
Printing of 2800 black and white flyers : R 500,00 (kindly donated by Parkhurst Primary School)
Banner for George Hey Park: R 675,00
Hiring of George Hey Park: R 1 140,00
Distribution of flyers: R1 075,00
Printing of Ribbons R 1373,70

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the event.

Yours sincerely
