November 2006

The CRA fight crime initiative takes off ****************************

Hopefully you will have seen the first two huts that have been erected on the corner of Bucchleuch and Cambridge and also at the corner of Buckingham and Roxburghe. The huts are currently manned by ADT for 12 hours a day, at their cost for the month of November. The guards have debit order forms if you still need to complete one (but also see note below).

While the response has been gratifying, it is essential that more households come forward with their monthly contribution of R182 if we are to roll out the project comprehensively. We urge you to be proactive – it’s sad but true, that if we don’t put more security measures in place, it could be your turn next. Just a friendly reminder – our target date is 15 November.

It’s probably an apposite moment to repeat the words of Peter Bruce, Editor of Business Day: he said: Have you or someone you love been attacked and/or robbed at gun point yet?  No? Feeling left out?  Never fear, your coming ordeal is inevitable. The crime wave in Johannesburg is now so bad, so pervasive, that the count of friends and acquaintances of mine who have been attacked is now running at about two a week. And I don’t know many people...

Recent evidence suggests that housebreak-ins and theft of or from cars has increased in our area, signaling the start of the affirmative shopping season, no doubt.

Let us not be victims – let’s get the upper hand.

Discount for ADT subscribers

ADT has confirmed that all its existing clients and any new clients will receive a special package – whatever their monthly payment is to ADT, it will be capped at R500 and this will include the contribution towards the CRA fight crime project. You need to contact ADT who will do the required administration and inform the CRA which, in turn, will then cancel your debit order form. Note: ADT will only implement the additional charge when given the go-ahead by the CRA – what we need now is your commitment. Don’t forget – the ADT package includes an armed response service, escort services, Netcare medical backup and additional patrols in our area.

Contact Steve Margo at ADT to set this in motion – smargo@tycoint.com, or 082 454-2115.

Other security news…

We have heard a rumour that SAS has been bought out by Top Security. Since SAS was involved in our original discussions we will follow this up and give you more information as soon as possible. If true, it won’t affect the roll-out but may have implications down the line.

If you need any more information you are welcome to contact Mike Holgate at  mholgate@mweb.co.za, 082 864-1400 or 011 788-5934 or John Turpin at 011 325-4547 or jrturpin@mweb.co.za.

Community news

Don’t forget – the fun day at Hugh Wyndham Park takes place this Sunday 12 November from 10-4. Our green spaces need all the support that we can give them. At the risk of (over!) plugging ADT, our thanks to them for their support for the day. For more information go to the CRA website’s Community Forum - www.cra.org.za/forum.htm. See you there!

There will be more news in the forthcoming Crier.
