CRA Newsletter           November 2008

Fun stuff – SAPPI Big Bird day and the river clean up 29 November – a great community initiative

·         If birding is your thing, get to the Braamfontein Spruit, Conrad Drive entry point – by Fratelli’s - by 06:00 and see if you can add to the CRA count – see our current list. You can also get information about Birding Big Day, the rules and categories at www.birdlife.org.za or email events@birdlife.org.za.

To join us with cleaning up our special river area, the team will be around from 09:00 -12:30. To get bags and gloves, come to one of the following points – CHP: Scout Hall, Buckingham Ave; the pedestrian bridge, Marlborough Ave (near Colourful Splendour Nursery – and note that CSS is manning this point – another opportunity to sign up as you clean up!); or Conrad Drive, as above. CP: either side of the Jan Smuts Ave bridge; bottom of Waterfall Ave.

Local businesses (including staunch supporters RKG) are manning each point and will also offer you refreshments – or bring along a picnic! Lindsay Saker will be showing off some latest models cars too. All in all, a great way of doing our environnmental bit, helping reduce “crime and grime” and meeting some of the great people who live in our area.

For more info contact Chris Taylor [083 294 5845] or Karen Hoffa.

Welcome to the CRA exec

We’re delighted to have Liz McConnell on board as Secretary/co-ordinator and Sheay Harvey for the long-vacant membership portfolio. Contact Sheay if you have any queries re how to join the CRA – remember, 2009 subs are now due. We’ve kept them at the same rate for the third year running (R220 per annum, less for sectional titles and pensioners – best value in town!) The higher our membership, the louder our voice.

Thank you to PSS subscribers

Thanks to everyone who has joined thus far – we commend you for your community spirit. For the latest list of subscribers by street, go to http://www.cra.org.za/index.cfm/p/pages.public-spaces-security-scheme.htm. If you’ve been meaning to join up – do it now! ** Don’t forget – the end of the year sees an increase in crime. If you are a pensioner on a fixed income, we may be able to arrange a rebate for you – contact Richard King or Amy. And if you’re free-loading…. well, why not consider playing a part in your community?

The winners! Congratulations to John & Manuela Jacobs who were our second winners of a free year’s subscription to the PSS scheme.

A few points –

·         ** We offer another sign up opportunity at SPAR, Lancaster Ave , on Saturday 29 November from 0900-10:30. Help keep us all safer over the festive season.

·         Contact Amy Allan asap if you’ve joined but haven’t got your welcome pack and wall plaque.

·         The CRA controls the monthly debit order run and NOT the bank.

·         Signing up is easy – either go on line to www.cra.org.za or contact Richard King or Bianca de Roland Philips [CHP]or Amy Allan for Craighall. Yvette Young is helping with the organisation of street reps.

§         November crime alerts that we know of -
- Marlborough Ave - housebreaking
- Devonshire Place – housebreaking
- Beaufort Ave – hold-up, robbed of car, jewellery etc
- Hamilton Ave – driveway robbery, jewellery stolen

-Jewellery still seems a target. Keep checking that you aren’t being followed home.

Extract from October minutes of Community Safety Forum (CSF):

Captain Kriel [based on Sept/Oct figures]: Burglaries of and theft out of motor vehicles have increased, while other crimes have decreased. The greatest criminal activity has been in Craighall Park and Parkhurst. Jan Smuts, in any direction, is mostly at risk. VW-vehicles were mostly targeted.

At house robberies, the gate was normally derailed and the front door broken. The following items were normally taken: laptops, jewellery, guns and plasma TV’s. Where house robberies were not opportunistic, perpetrators received information from domestic workers or workmen at the house. House breakers were black and white: a 60-year old white male, linked to 8 house robberies in the area, was recently arrested.

Other security info

-          Domestic Watch – Kerryn Lawson has done a sterling job coordinating DW. Unfortunately she can’t carry on next year. The CRA would be really sorry if we have to discontinue DW because we can’t find a replacement. PLEASE – isn’t there someone out there who can help for a couple of hours a month 10 times a year? Contact Kerryn or Richard if you can help.

-          Thanks to the CRA initiative a regular monthly Shopping Centre Forum meeting is held with most local shopping centre managers present – resident Adam Bunkell is handling this. Contact Adam if you experience a crime incident that may be linked to leaving a local shopping centre.

-          The CRA is actively supporting SAPS police reservists. Let Eric Glover know if you would like inspections of eg vacant properties.

-          Don’t forget to use the CRA’s online crime incident form. See our safety tips.
