Report
back on first month of PSS scheme with CSS
·
Overall feedback has been favourable, particularly in
respect of response times by CSS (*see crime alerts below). There
are 3 patrol vehicles at this stage. A fourth is urgently needed –
see subscriber information below.

It seems that the Welcome letter, with 2 car stickers and
telephone decals, has not been received by all subscribers and that
that not everybody has a wall plaque. Please contact Amy
Allan asap if you haven’t got all the above. The
letter contains the number for subscribers to call in the event of
an emergency, to report suspicious activity etc.
Note that a call to the number goes direct to CSS’s offices and
subscribers have commented on how quickly calls are answered.

While the CRA believes that some of CSS’s admin has not
been up to par, we know that their use of technology surpasses most
other security companies. Each vehicle is linked to a GP map,
allowing the CSS Control room to mark which points must be passed.
At this stage, CSS is still analysing “hot spots” and have
assured us that they are working on optimal patrol zones and
identification of best routes and traffic trends before the
checkpoint locations are decided upon and implemented. If a vehicle
is stationary for more than 15 minutes (unless an incident has been
reported) a buzzer goes off in the Control room. If you wish to
query routes taken by a CSS vehicle, contact CSS at 0861 911 119.

Including complexes, 520 people have signed up to date. If
each one of you can get just one friend or neighbour to sign up too,
we will be very close to having a full solution. Get two more
people on board – then our suburbs will then be really well
protected.
Getting
more complexes on board: CRA records indicate that there are
some 50 complexes in our area. If we conservatively assume an
average of 12 sectional title units per complex, each with 2
occupants, that’s 1200 people, many of whom we have no contact
details for. If you know anyone living in apartments/clusters,
please contact Amy so that
we can follow up. Can we operate as an effective community if the
CRA is not engaging with such a large number of people?

October
crime alerts
that we know of -
- Suspicious individuals
are posing as technicians from different security companies. If in
doubt – phone CSS or your armed response company to investigate.
- Woollies at the Valley Shopping Centre was robbed.
- Waterfall Ave: armed men robbed an estate agent while the property
was on show.
- Lancaster Ave: armed robbery at a shop.

: car hijacking. Victim subsequently reported: “CSS responded immediately, asked intelligent questions. SAPS
arrived half an hour later – just as a call from CSS reported that
they had found the hijacked car abandoned 10 minutes away. We have
nothing but praise for the professional way in which CSS handled
this incident.”
- The “jewellery syndicate” seems to be operating throughout
Jhb. If at a shopping centre, turn your rings inwards. Don’t flash
your Rolex or similar watch. Be wary of guards at parking booms who
help you put your ticket in. Keep checking that you aren’t being
followed home.

You haven’t yet joined? Not sure about the PSS scheme?

4 or 11 November. On
11 November, the next draw to win a year’s subscription @ R385 pm
to the PSS scheme will take place (R385 per household, R85 per
sectional title unit). See if you’re the lucky one and also come
and meet fellow residents – let’s shake off our apathy and also
get to know people in our area. Out of the Jhb rut, residents –
there’s lots of good stuff beyond our high walls and electric
fences. OUR AIM IS TO MAKE OUR AREA A BEACON IN HANDLING LIFE TODAY!
Admin
matters
Apologies to subscribers to the former
ADT scheme whose last debit order payment only went through in early
October. Due to the controls implemented by the CRA, there was a
delay in getting the double authorisation required to effect the
debit run.
Where refunds are due to such
subscribers, these are virtually all done. Many thanks to the
several residents who elected to donate their refunds to the CRA.
The CSS debit orders are going through
at the beginning of each month.

Fence on the spruit – our Ward Councillor felt that a
fence between REEA and the CHP Scout Hall would be an additional
security measure and also help prevent illegal dumping of rubble.
City Parks initially indicated that some funding might be available,
but the position is now not clear. If you have any views let Chris
Taylor, Karen Hoffa
or Ian Ollis know.

We understand that ADT armed response clients are now
receiving regular information. They are quite entitled to do this
but please note that this is quite separate to our community-driven
Public Spaces Security scheme and that the CRA no longer has formal
ties with ADT.
§
The CRA has invested in Customer Relationship Management
software. This includes revamping our website and enhancing bulk
email facilities. Later – depending on cost – an SMS facility
may be possible.
