There are two things
to aim at in life: first, to get what you want; and after that, to enjoy
it. Welcome to 2008 – we hope
that it brings you what you want – and that you’ll enjoy it! We are delighted to
start the year with the re-introduction of Domestic Watch meetings. It just
goes to show that when a few residents lend their support to a project, more
things happen! Hats off to Kerryn
Lawson, Amy Allen and Lourens Malan for getting this important project off the
ground. There are a number of
other areas where such inputs would make a difference, particularly with
membership, environment and community affairs. If you’d like to make a
contribution, why not make it your New Year’s resolution to put something
into your community? (A chairperson would be good!) A list of CRA exec contact
details will be found at the end of the newsletter. Domestic
Watch Programme – first meeting There
has been a great response to the re-introduction of these meetings so we’re
in a position to confirm that the first meeting for 2008 will be held on
Tuesday, 29 January at 10h00 at the Rosebank Union Church in Hurlingham. Whilst
we hope to be able to hold meetings at a venue within our suburb in the
future, we need to get an indication of numbers before we can justify this to
co-ordinator, Penny Steyn. We are really pushing for this. Thanks to the support of
several residents, we are able to assist with transport to the Rosebank Union
Church. If your employee needs a lift, they need to be at either the main
Valley Centre Shopping Centre sign on Jan Smuts Avenue, or in the parking lot
at The Spar in Craighall Park no later
than 09:30. Each
attendee will need to pay R20.00 per meeting. Receipts
will be given by means of a stamp “Paid” on the lessons given to each
attendee. Domestic
Watch is not a “course” that begins and ends. It is an ongoing process of lessons teaching
crime prevention and keeping abreast of current trends in criminal activity
and methods of self and household protection against criminals.
Employers, domestics, gardeners and any other of your staff are all welcome.
Refreshments are served and any contribution towards these will be
appreciated. If
you haven’t yet responded or want to know more or can help, contact Kerryn
Lawson kerrynl@meropa.co.za. Ensuring
a safer festive season ADT was
approached with a view to providing additional
security over the festive season. On
your behalf, the CRA was prepared to pay for this service but ADT supplied us
with an extra 24 x7 patrol vehicle at no cost. It was very reassuring to see it over the holiday season and
ADT reported that as far as they knew, THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS in either
suburb over the days around Christmas - what a pleasant change, How
nice it would be if we could sign up more subscribers for the Community
Security Scheme (CSS) and have this extra vehicle on a long
term basis. As a way
of expressing the community’s appreciation for the service, the CRA gave a
R100 Pick ‘n Pay voucher to the 10 ADT guards who were on the Christmas Day
shift (5 vehicles and 2 shifts). ADT’s Steve Margo commented that the
guards were most appreciative and wish to thank the
community for thinking of them. For more
information about the CSS either visit the CRA website or contact Eric
Glover or Mike Wilmot. For other
issues relating to crime and security, contact Richard
King at or Philip Bond.
More
thanks… Talking of having good responses, our thanks to residents who
have already paid their 2008 subs. Even if you are unable to spare any time
for CRA projects, becoming a CRA member makes us a more effective organisation.
For online payment info complete the subs form at http://www.cra.org.za/index.cfm/p/pages.subscription-form.htm. The CRA
exec next meets at the beginning of February so we’ll provide you with more
feedback after that. Executive
