CRA Public Space Security

The PSS scheme with CSS on track – we start 1 October

The good news is that over 300 homeowners and sectional title units have already signed up and the CRA exec confirms that you will see the first CSS Tactical vehicles from 1 October, each manned by two highly trained officers. We are 90 subscribers short of getting a third vehicle so if you haven’t signed up yet, now is the time to do it – and be in line for the next draw to win a year’s free subscription.

Of course, to implement the full solution for really effective protection of our streets – more vehicles and cameras throughout our suburbs – we need another 390 homes and businesses to subscribe.

Crime incidents, unfortunately, continue unabated. We don’t have the full picture but in the past 2 weeks reported to the CRA have been:

v      an armed robbery in Waterfall Ave

v      a young schoolboy walking home in Westminster Drive stopped and robbed of his cell phone by three men in a car

v      two violent armed robberies – one in Cambridge and one in Alexandra Ave

Plus report by Capt. Kriel (CPF minutes July): “in Craig sector, 10 cases of business robberies along Jan Smuts reported and 5 in Waterfall Ave. Other incidents in Richmond and Rutland were reported between 10:00 and 19:15… Trio crimes (House robbery, Business robbery, Hijacking) were on the increase.”

In all cases, if the area had been under camera surveillance, the suspicious activity would most likely have been picked up before the crime occurred.

·         Sign up! Now is not the time to sit on the fence – let’s work together as a community and play our part in dealing with crime. Let’s show that we care when an elderly widow is attacked and robbed…

·         Remember – the PSS scheme is to protect our streets and public spaces. The current security scheme administered by ADT ceases wef 30 September but if ADT is your armed response provider, this is quite separate and is in no way affected by the new PSS scheme.

·         In our next newsletter we’ll provide an updated list of street numbers of everyone who has signed up. This information, along with a general update, was in the CRA’s hard copy newsletter, the Crier, hand delivered to your mail box. If you didn’t receive a copy it’s online.

·         The cost for the PSS scheme is R385 pm and R85 per unit for sectional title units. Business rates are from R395 pm. The debit order system will be managed by Jasper Management Services.

·         Crime prevention is a two-way process. You need to be alert – check that you are not being followed. Report any suspicious activity to the Police at 10111 or your armed response provider or [until 30/9] the ADT patrol vehicles. The CRA website has many safety tips.

·         The CRA thanks the SAPS police reservists who in their own time and at their expense, do extra patrols in our area. The CRA is in the process of providing them with additional resources. If you know of eg a vacant property where there is suspicious activity, contact Eric Glover, our liaison person with the Reservists.

·         Domestic Watch plays an important role in crime prevention – it’s really in your interests to empower your employees this way. Next meeting: Friday 29 August at 12:00, Wesleyan Church , Norfolk Ave , CHP.

Signing up for the new PSS scheme is easy – either go on line to www.cra.org.za or contact Richard King or Bianca de Roland Philips [CHP]or Amy Allan or Sarah Chorley for Craighall. [Note: Bianca is away until mid-September.] Yvette Young is helping with the organisation of street reps.

Business should contact Catherine Goodwin or Ricky, Kevin or Bryan at CSS. CRA exec members Paulette Malcolm and Wendy McAllister are also able to assist.

Note: CSS Tactical will come to any gathering of neighbours who want more information. Why not invite your neighbours around and hear about the Public Spaces Security scheme first hand.
