1. SECURITY
Volunteer patrols in unmarked cars
In a major effort to be pro-active against continuing crime in our suburbs several residents volunteered to work with the Parkview Police during the holidays.

In conjunction with Senior Superintendent Moodley and officers of the Parkview Police, the CRA organised volunteers to drive their private vehicles with two policemen in each vehicle. The idea is to have four unmarked vehicles, a few nights during December and January, touring Craighall Park and Craighall suburbs. Any apprehending that needs to be done is done by the policemen in the car. The initial forays into the suburbs took place in December and arrests were made including pedestrians with drugs and knives.

The idea is to create a fear amongst the criminals in our suburbs that not only do they have to watch out for police vehicles but also unmarked vehicles manned by the police.

We currently have 12 volunteers on our roster and any additional people wishing to sign up should contact John Turpin on 011 325-4547.

Although violent crime (hijacking/armed robbery etc) has diminished, the major problem continues to be housebreaking. We strongly advise you to have your exterior doors locked when watching TV, for example, and close as many windows as possible when you go to bed or are out.

A reminder – report any suspicious persons in your street or in your vicinity to the Police - use 10111 when making contact with the Police as this is the most efficient way for their concerns to be passed on to the Parkview Police and, more importantly, their police vehicles.

2. TRAFFIC
Spar and surrounds parking

Residents will be pleased to hear that after many discussions with Metro and Johannesburg Roads, the parking shambles at the corner of Clarence and Lancaster (Spar corner) is being addressed. Residents will have noted that Johannesburg Roads have already set down no parking lines and traffic lines in the area. This now allows Metro Police to either fine or tow away vehicles who are parked in the wrong areas. We are particularly worried about the vehicles that have their rear end of the vehicle jutting out into the way of traffic and pedestrians on Clarence Avenue. Residents, be alert to the requirements in this area and assist the authorities if you observe any out of line activity in this area.

Your executive wishes you all the very best for 2006. Our goal is to place the CRA among the very best and effective of residents’ associations in Johannesburg – we can do it with your support. Don’t delay – send your 2006 subscription today (see attached subs form).
