Breaking news - announcing CRA chairperson
Ralf Degni (082 540 1135) has been elected Chairperson with Peter HeritageAs you will know, for some time the CRA chair has been filled on a rotational basis. We're pleased to say that Craighall resident as Deputy chair.
Residents are asked to contact the appropriate exec member when they have a query or problem, and we'll escalate the matter up if necessary. Peter will continue to handle traffic and infrastructure and Ralf, business liaison, marketing and signage.
Lynne Hannant has established a CRA office at REEA, Marlborough Ave, CHP, and is there most mornings. A postbox outside for residents to leave letters etc for the CRA is planned. Lynne can be contacted at 011 788 4745 or 083 226 5228. REEA resident Bruce will also take messages. This is a great example of working together and of community support and input and the CRA will keep you posted on developments at REEA.
Electricity charges
We have been informed that City Power's proposed increases in the domestic single phase tariff (rises of between 53% and 60% with the introduction of a stepped tariff for increasing consumption), and increases of 23% to 27% for the three phase tariff, have been overturned by the Regulator. Energy charges in the two conventional domestic tariffs should be the same, particularly as the three phase increase last year was too much.
Town Planning
- Application for a B&B at 7 Abby Drive - objected to by the CRA
- Application for consent for a guest house (6 rooms) - 10 Devonshire Avenue - objected to by the CRA
- 467 Buckingham to subdivide – no objection by CRA
- 87 Buckingham to subdivide – no objection by CRA
We are informed that Pikitup's crushing plants will soon be fully operational and it will then be possible to drop builder's rubble at garden sites. We will advise you when we have more information.
Crime and security
CSS reports that the modus operandi of criminals has changed recently. The trend is now to observe their victims over a period of time before acting. You may not notice them as they may be on foot, in a car or on a bicycle. However they will be loitering nearby or passing you. CSS highlights the importance of calling in any suspicious activity [0861 911 119]. All suspicious incidents, activity, cars and people are logged on their database.
There were also two reported incidents [in May and July] of houses with "a for sale" notice targeted by a group of well-dressed, plausible criminals gaining entry by posing as buyers.
Please - if you're reading this and you haven't yet joined the PSS scheme, why not do it today. Crime incidents in our area are significantly down but even one violent crime a month is too many. Contact Amy Allan or Tony Webb.

Environment and Community Affairs
Thanks to resident Gail Jelley for tidying up the area on the corner of Buckingham/Hamilton Aves. Last week the CRA did some cleaning up on the public area opposite Burnside Ave. Thanks to everyone who is helping to make our area look cleaner. This includes the boys from Parktown Boys (Tristan, Jason et al) who chose to do their environment project in Craighall Park and did a great job helping REEA and cleaning the weeds at the corner of Rutland/Bompas.
