"If you think something small can't make a difference, try going to sleep with a mosquito in the room." --- Unknown

Welcome to 2009 - hope it will be a good year for all of us. Let's turn pessimism into optimism by making this the year that everyone makes a contribution for the good of our community, no matter how small. And let's have clean pavements throughout the area!
Important note:
As you can see, we have a new look newsletter** that ties in with our new look website. However, merging CRA data with that of the City Council is giving us a few headaches. If this newsletter has been sent to you in error, please accept our apologies - just let Wendy McAllister know and it will be sorted out.
Also contact Wendy if you've had trouble with the City Council getting your address wrong. We're working with Kagiso Urban Management to try and resolve errors with Council's data eg where the Council's bills go to the wrong address (in one case, the street number doesn't exist), often leading to bills being unpaid and services being disconnected.

Crime alerts
  1. PSS subscribers will have been notified about a blue Jeep Cherokee that is following people home (false registrations include MKC 845 GP and MLJ 689 GP). At least 5 vehicles have been followed from schools when pupils are picked up. Once home, victims are robbed of jewellery and cell phones. The Randburg Police informed us that a BMW White X5 is also involved.
  2. Look out for a person with a delivery bike parked on top of one of the traffic circles in our area. His story is that he has run out of petrol and urgently needs to get his deliveries done, and then asks for some petrol money. CSS has been alerted but if you should see this character, call CSS at 0861 911 119.
  3. A smash and grab incident was reported on 15 January on the corner of William Nichol & Jan Smuts.
Security matters
Encouraging more residents to join the PSS scheme remains a high priority. There will be an opportunity to sign up at the Colony Shopping Centre from 09:00 on Saturday 31 January. For information or queries contact Richard King or Amy Allen.
Incidents reported by CSS are:
December: hijacking in Lancaster Ave; robbery,Rutland Ave (possibly linked to Valley Shopping Centre)
January:attempted housebreaking, Bedford Ave.
The Shopping Centre Forum
This initiative is going from strength from strength. Hyde Park Shopping Centre, in particular, is working closely with CSS, SAPS and other residents' associations. The Centre is pooling resources / information for expensive systems such as licence plate recognition with CSS (that's how the Jeep Cherokee mentioned above was picked up).
CRA residents, Adam and Tracy Bunkell, are driving this project. If you are at a local shopping centre and have a security concern:
  • approach the first security personnel that you see
  • report the incident or the threat to him/her
  • take the security personnel's name
  • communicate the incident to the CRA as well as to your relevant security service provider (CSS / ADT / Top Security)
Braamfontein Spruit:frequent reports of homeless people living along the river remain of concern, particularly in these days of cholera threats. In addition to ongoing liaison with SAPS Parkview Reservists, the CRA has now also joined forces with Blairgowrie's David Potter who in turn keeps Linden SAPS informed. David reported an incident on 13 January of a domestic worker accosted by 4 men at the corner of Wendy & Hillcrest Aves and robbed of her cell phone. The worker said that the men came from the park.

A message from our Ward Councillor, Ian Ollis
It seems that not everyone is familiar with the City Council's structure and modus operandi. On approaching our Ward Councillor about this, his response is:
Hi All
As ward councillor for Ward 90, I send out a regular newsletter to residents around every six weeks. It is sent via email to any email addresses on my database. The newsletter covers aspects of council business, service delivery issues, planning issues and the highlights, good and bad, of the suburbs in ward 90 which include Craighall and Craighall Park. My database is managed online by Yahoo groups. In order to join, you can add your name and email address to the Ward 90 group on Yahoo, or you can send me an email with your name, suburb and email address. I will then add you to the list.
Many residents find it useful to receive as it summarises relevant information and often I provide telephone numbers etc. for follow up of local issues. Please take this opportunity of getting connected.
Regards, Ian

Water leaks
Given our aging water infrastructure, Joburg Water has replaced many of the pressure valves in our area. However, this increased pressure has led to an increasing number of burst water pipes. Phone Joburg Water if you see a water leak. 011 688 1500.

Last - don't forget that 2009 subs are due!
