April 2004

Every nationšs wealth lies ultimately in the imagination of its people. Peter Brinson

AGM REMINDER!
Wednesday 19 May 2004, 19:00 for 19:30, Craighall Primary School

1.         Security

Crime emanating from the Spruit continues to be a matter of concern to both Craighall Park and Craighall residents. However, organised sweeps in this area have recently been jointly conducted by Park Department Wardens, River Rangers, South African Police (Parkview), Metro Police and the SADF.

The Parks Department has recently employed a full-time Park Warden Manager and she will take forward the initiatives already in place on the Spruit in Craighall and Craighall Park. She started work on Monday, 5 April and will be introduced to us in the near future.  In addition Paulette Malcolm (Environment) is putting together a programme for the homeless in the Spruit with the objective of providing them with jobs: Paulette appeals to businesses who are interested in beautifying the public areas of our suburb eg along Jan Smuts Ave to contact her to help with such employment. (082 452-9322).

The Craighall Striker (our police vehicle) has been repaired and will be back in business at the end of this week.  As you already know, during the time that it was in for repairs the Parkview Police arranged in the interim for another pool vehicle to be available on a 24-hour four shift basis. Welcome the Striker back when you see it on the streets!

The crime situation in our suburbs and in the northern sector of Parkview Police shows considerable improvement on the experience for the same period last year. 2004 has seen significant reductions in overall crime, particularly violent crime. Unfortunately on Wednesday night a hijacking took place on Buckingham Avenue at 20:00 which kind of mars our good record. A father and his daughter were hijacked and taken to various locations in Johannesburg but were returned unhurt together with their car but nevertheless it was a traumatic experience.

3.       Noise control

Some residents will know that the E tv building at the top of Cambridge has been irritating neighbours with violent noises which have emanated from two huge fans on the roof of their building on Summit road. The CRA requested the intervention of the Health Department and it is now being organised that a procedure has been set in place by Etv that if the fans are activated for any reason other than fire they will be turned off immediately by their security on a 24 / 7 basis.

4.      Town planning

The CRA has publicised widely its concerns with the City Councilšs sale of the Beaufort koppie area. Believing that we can make an example of this to draw attention to flawed procedures, a petition was drawn up. Over 380 signatures were obtained which would indicate that many feel strongly that fair play is important. The petition has been delivered to the Metro Centre and we have told by the Council official who handles petitions Mr M Sheburi - that we will have a response within 14 days. We will keep you informed of progress.
