March 2004

Community politics is what will transform this country. Clem Sunter

And in the run up to elections…

Democracy means everybody gets the chance to have an ulcer. Pieter-Dirk Uys

Important date to diarise – the AGM will take place on Wednesday 19 May 2004 at 19:00 for 19:30 at Craighall Primary School.

  1. Security

Criminal elements in the Spruit:  at the instigation of the CRA, meetings are currently ongoing with the Parks department, SAP (Parkview police), Metro police, Cllr Judy Stockhill, Paulette Malcolm and the Chairman. Meetings with River Rangers and Park Wardens have already taken place to determine commitment by these two organisations.

Naming of police patrol vehicle: as you may have seen announced in the Rosebank Gazette, Class 2L at Craighall Primary came up with the winning name of Craighall Striker. Thanks again to the School for their enthusiasm in running this competition.

Unfortunately our Craighall Striker vehicle was in an accident this past weekend while on duty. It has been established that it was not the fault of the police manning the vehicle but of the second party involved. While our vehicle is being repaired by the police garage, Parkview has replaced the Striker with another one of their vehicles on a 24/7 basis. The number of this vehicle is PV8 and has a canopy, unlike our PV18.

  1. Traffic

The menace of taxis in our suburbs is still on the agenda.  There don’t seem to be any accepted controls from Metro Police. The Chairman has again requested an approved route map so that the CRA can become active in controlling the situation in Craighall Park and Craighall.

Note: the Traffic portfolio is still vacant. Any person who may be able to assist is asked to contact John Turpin at 011 325-4547, email jrturpin@mweb.co.za.

  1. Environment

The CRA is planning to work in conjunction with Hyde Park Residents’ Association regarding the adoption of the islands between Jan Smuts and Nichol highway.

Caroline Fouché continues to chip away at the bureaucracy in establishing which signs in the area are legal and what can be done with undesirable signage.

4. Town Planning

·         The City Council on 25/3/04 approved the sale of the Beaufort koppie area (for a mere R48 800 for 465sq m). A notice will be published in eg the Government Gazette, after which objections may be lodged. The City’s view is that if there is an opportunity to derive rateable income from previously unproductive land, this is the preferred route. The CRA intends to take up the matter with Johannesburg Property Company.

·         The Etv building stands squat and ugly above Cambridge Avenue. A complaint about excessive noise from fans is being investigated by the City’s Noise Pollution team.

·         GARAGE ON JAN SMUTS AVENUE CORNER OF EASTWOOD ROAD:
There will be a public meeting on 22 April. Public participation is a requirement of an EIA, an environmental impact assessment. Phone Charmaine Kruger of SEF Planners, 012 349-1307 or 082-655-4712 for more information.

** REEA has announced the opening of a shop at their premises on 1 April. See the CRA Community Forum – www.cra.org.za

**The Organic Morning market at REEA -  If you would like to set up an organic/natural/greenie/crafty goods stall phone Paulette Malcolm, 787-3680.

This morning market is a great way to achieve a whole gamut of objectives - raise environmental awareness, celebrate environmentally significant days, use open space, offer work opportunities, support REEA - they have a coffee shop - and build community i.e. get to know your neighbours! Please come. NEXT DATE should be 10 April.
