June 2004

1.            Security

At recent Parkview Police meetings it has been confirmed that the crime incidents in the precinct are fewer this year in relation to the same period in 2003. For the moment at least, Craighall and Craighall Park are even better than the overall precinct statistics and we hope and believe that this is in some way due to our dedicated police vehicle.  This doesn’t mean that we should drop our guard as there are still hotspots in the precinct that need to be eliminated, but at the moment none of them are in our two suburbs.  The most frequent and undesirable crimes throughout the precinct continue to be the theft of vehicles and Parkview Police are currently concentrating on this particular issue. The station continues to set up road blocks in and around our suburbs as this kind of operation has produced good results.

At the last meeting it was reported that the relationship between the security companies and the police has improved significantly and this of course is bearing fruit as these two organisations can help each other in many practical ways when that cooperation is put in place.

There has been an improvement in the information that we are receiving from informers and as you know this serves to nip crime in the bud before it happens and is a very necessary part of the polices’ armoury.

2.         Help, help, help

As discussed at the recent AGM in May your Association continues to look for assistance in the areas of Town Planning and Development, Treasury and Security.  Fortunately volunteers answered our call at the AGM (Sue Beard – Traffic; Felicity Cotton – Environment) and we welcome these two with great enthusiasm onto the board as we have much to do in these two areas.

3.            Planning – Beaufort koppie

The CRA community has come up trumps in terms of support, with over 150 objections received so far. A number of residents and CRA exec members met a delegation of Council officials at the koppie on 29 June to draw attention to the area and the issues. The CRA are hoping that this issue will come to some favourable conclusion through our discussions with city authorities etc and we will keep you informed.

4.         Some general information

  • You may be interested to know that an ambulance service has been set up at 51-6th Street in Parkhurst. This operation is prepared to service the Parkview precinct of which we are a part and the contact number is (011) 884-6660.
  • The question of improving the overall situation in the Spruit is currently being addressed by all the major role players - this includes Parkview police, City Parks, City Power, Metro Police, River Rangers and many others who have responsibility in this area.  The project as far as the CRA is concerned is being headed up by Paulette Malcolm and she can be contacted at (011) 787-3680 by anyone who is prepared to assist in this important venture or who wish to advise us of anything important regarding this subject.
  • Once again, under the auspices of St Martin’s-in-the-Veld, a charity black tie dinner, dance and auction with a Christmas theme is being held (Deans Gate Old Age Home is one of the beneficiaries).  Details: Sunnyside Park Hotel, Friday 23 July 2004. TO BOOK: contact Joscelin Whitfield at 082 895 0303 or St Martin’s (011) 788-5143. (Did you know that Deans Gate has 60 residents - the oldest is 102 years old. The home started life as The Dean’s Shelter for men in 1934 in Doornfontein and moved to its present location in Craighall Park in 1984 when it became a home for the aged. It provides for the needy aged but the decrease in government subsidy (30% over the last 3 years) has strained resources.)
  • WARD 90 ORGANIC MARKET

SATURDAY 10 JULY, 08:00 TO NOON, CRAIGHALL PARK
REEA in Marlborough Avenue, next to Colourful Splendour Nursery.
